Studio XPS power supply

Here's the one to get: PC Power & Cooling Silencer PPCS500D

I just got one and it works great. Make sure you get the "D" version which is specifically Dell Compatible - other versions will not fit.

Get it from Newegg.com. It's on sale with a promo code and a rebate too until 12/31. Much less than $100 with all that. Get on it!

My video card is a GeForce 9600 GSO with 768MB memory.  The card is supposedly "overclocked" by the manufacturer.  So in our opinion the 360W Dell PSU will run this card with no problem?

Just to clear up some misinformation in this thread..

You don't need a "dell specific" power supply if you choose to upgrade. Any off the shelf ATX power supply will work.

Hi Rich, You should have no problems running that card on an 360w PSU.

Is there a 6 pin power connector on the stock power supply?  My video card requires this power connection.

Just purchased an Studio XPS as well, and curious to hear an update to OP (or others) on more power upgrade comments. Really worried about frying my system, and want to get more feedback before upgrading. I talked to a sales rep today and they told me there are no possible upgrades to the studio power supply. They werent very helpful IMO. I wouldnt mind purchasing one from dell, if they had one.

I've found a power consumption chart on Ars Technica comparing the 4870 and 4850. It looks like they are very close, I should be able to run the 4870 no  problem.

Hey Mr. Dell, With such a great computer a little extra juice can't hurt. :emotion-14: I going to purchase the studio xps as well and will go with either the 4850 or 4870. On a side note, I spoke with a sales rep from India and he told me that installing a another os would void my warranty?! This is probably untrue. He also said that the PSU would support the 4870, I'm not sure if I trust his advice. :emotion-7:

Guy upgraded a new XPS Studio with an Antec Earthwatts 500W PS and an ATI 4870.  Bottom line, off the shelf power supplies will indeed fit in this case...just make sure the dimensions are 150mm x 140mm x 86mm.  Anything bigger and it won't fit.  I put in the Antec 650W Earthwatts and a Noctua 92mm case fan.  The system runs like a dream and is dead silent.

I spoke with 2 sales reps from India, nice enough chaps, the first said 4870 would  be ok on the existing PSU. The second said he didn't know. It would be a nice feature on the site to have a power consumption rating chart for each system.:emotion-55:

I would.  I just like to upgrade a piece of hardware one at a time just for troubleshooting purposes.  I something goes wrong after installing the PS (and it didn't in my install).....you can narrow the possible culprits.  Plus, with the additional power requirements of the 4870 dictates installation of the PS first.  Good luck!

I just purchased a XPS Studio 435 with the following specifications.

The day the system arrived, I scrapped everything accept the processor, ram, video card and Blue Ray player.  I only gave 850 dollars for the system from the Dell Outlet store.

Here is what I ended up with.

Intel Core 7 940 @2.93 OC to 4.5 on stock heatsink and fan
ASUS Rampage 2 X58 Mother Board
12MB DDR3 tri-channel ram set to 7 latency at 1066 1.65v
Thermaltake Tsunami aluminum mid tower case with side window
Thermaltake Tough Power PS 750w
Radeon 4850 OC to 120mghz
2 WD Veloraptor 300GB 10K RPM Drives Raid 0
2 WD Cavalier 640GB 7.2K RPM Drives Raid O
BlueRay DVD player / Record
HP DVD / CD RW LightScribe
Windows Vista Ultimate 64 Retail

With the MB, case, PS, drives and DVD, I spent another $1300 and some change.  Total investment is under $2200 and I will match it against any XPS out there for under $5k.  For what ever it is worth, the original case, MB and power supply are only good for one thing; TARGET PRACTICE.  I will agree with another post I read which stated that the ram and mother board are such new technology, they are probably built by some well known manufactures.  The problem with the mother board is that it literally has no room for expansion.  A SLI or Crossfire set up is not going to happen with that mother board.  The power supply has just enough power to handle the components that Dell sells them with.  The stock fan noise is so loud you will be tempted to pitch it the first day you own it, but what do you expect for a grand? My advice for you if your still in that 21 day period, send her back for a refund, browse the outlet site and wait to you see a smoking deal like I found, then buy the system for what it is worth, which is for its components.  There is no one out there that is gong to sell you a i7 940 processor, 12mb of DDR3 and a mother board for less than a grand.  Throw in the BlueRay player and two 640gb drives in to that picture and it is pretty easy to buy the system and pitch the garbage.
