Problems with Seagate STT20000A Tape Drive, Retrospect and NTBackup
System: Dimension 4800 with Windows XP and latest critital updates
When trying to configure a backup using ntbackup.exe, the Seagate STT20000A
external tape drive purchased with the system does not appear as an option to which to backup. It does appear in Device Manager and there are no problems noted. The user is a member of both the Administrators and Backup Operators groups.

The drive does work. It came with Retrospect 5.5 and I have had nothing but trouble with it and therefore am trying to accomplish backing up with Backup in XP. With Retrospect, although I script various specific folders on the user's PC and a couple of others on the network, it only backs up his entire C drive.
Any suggestions?

The built in Windows XP is very limited on what it will back up and where it will back up to.
Your best option is to use a commercial backup program.
BTW, your question is an operational/software issue, not really an "external peripheral" issue and should have been posted in either the Other Software of the Windows XP Software section.

Thanks for your response despite my misposting. As Retrospect was the software that came with the Seagate drive, I decided to post here. I thought there was a possibility that Retrospect was somehow "disengaging" ntbackup.
I have other clients for whom I am using ntbackkup.exe and it backs up files/folders on mapped drives without any problems. It also recognizes tapes drives. I find it strange that it doesn't on this particular installation. Will try the software forum.

Hi,
The identical drive I have works fine under XP Pro.
Send me a message with an e-mail address and I'll point you to web space where I have the correct drivers for the TBU from Seagate, plus a DOS test program and a firmware upgrade.
I also have a long e-mail from Seagate about the drive which I can forward.
