This forum post should help. Remember that just because they have the same socket does not guarantee compatibility. The i7 you mention draws more wattage and runs hotter.

I thought of i7-4910MQ in the first place.

Since it has higher TDP(47watt) than i5-4300M (37watt), I have done more study and found i7-4712MQ which has exactly the same TDP as i5-4300MQ  (37watt). 

So I am thinking to go for i7-4712MQ finally to avoid that heating related issue.. In this case, should I be concerned about any other issues?

Just make sure your BIOS is up to date.

And make sure to replace the thermal paste.

did this actually work i have the one with the intel gpu and want to upgrade it 

I replaced a dual core I5 4300 M CPU in my E6440 with a quad core I7 4702 MQ.

They both have the same 37W TDP.  The machine runs great and I have not had any problems with overheating.  Please sure to apply fresh thermal paste to the top of the new CPU before reinstalling the heat sink.  A quad core I7 4712 MQ should also work as it also has a 37W TDP.

BTW, I also installed a mSATA Samsung PM871 SSD 256 GB in the 3rd mini card slot (mini PCI-E slot above the WWAN) and the combination of the quad core CPU and the SSD as the boot drive results in a much faster laptop!

I'm up to replace the current i5-4310M on my latitude e6440 with an i7-4712MQ or i7-4702MQ. Since all these CPUs have the same TDP, is it necessary to replace my current heatsink, and my adapter (currently in use 90w)? 

Also, I was wondering which upgrade is better in terms of overall performance:

         CPU (i5-4310M to i7-4712MQ or 4702-MQ)

                                      Vs

(RAM: 8GB to 16GB /SSD: WD green 240GB to Samsung Evo 860 256GB)

No need for new heatsink.

Just remember to update the BIOS and use some new silicon paste.

Hello,

I am trying to upgrade a i7-4610M CPU on my Dell E6440 (A23 BIOS, discrete GPU) to i7-4910MQ, but once I put i7-4910MQ CPU - the system won't boot. The CPU fan does not start (its surely working with the old CPU).  Any ideas? Do I need  to downgrade the BIOS or do something else?

Downgrade would not help.

What you would need is a BIOS upgrade.

The i7-4610M is 37W TDP and the i7-4910MQ is 47W TDP.

It should work but run hot???

Do you have the descrete GPU???

What is the wattage of your AC adapter???
