I recently received a Dell Inspiron e1505 with Ubuntu 7.04. I enabled the nVidia restricted driver through Gnome's "restricted driver manager" to take full advantage of my video card. I didn't care much for the results and so disabled it through the restricted driver manager. I rebooted for the changes to take effect. After what seemed to be a normal login (music and all), I ended up with a blank white screen. I was able to start a xterm session through the session startup type selection box at the bottom of the normal login screen. Using "sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg" I tried reconfigure the xorg.conf file. Now, I've ended up with a situation where the X server errors out on startup and becomes disabled. The final message I get is to restart the GDM after I fix the xorg configuration problems, then I'm left with a screen that has: Ubuntu 7.04 dell tty1 dell login: I've tried many logins and passwords all to no avail. Can anyone tell me how to proceed from here?
Yes, I used 'nv'. I think the only problem with the reconfigured xorg.conf file was that module "i2c" was not loaded. If I manually add that line to the xorg.conf file and reboot, I get the normal login screen. But after entering my username and password, I get a blank screen and I'm dead in the water. This was my original problem. The status of where I'm at now is that is that I can login if I elect to startup in a "safe" terminal session mode or reboot using the ubuntu CDROM. I have tried everything I can think of to try and restore the original ubuntu partition that dell installed to the state I had before enabling nVidia restricted drivers, to no avail. One of the big problems is that from the terminal session, I don't know how to open a connection to the web so I can perform "apt-get update install f". So, I'm about to give up restoring the what I had. Question is "Do I do a fresh install from the ubuntu CDROM, or use the dell scripts to redo their installation (lose everything I added)"? I'll probably do that first, since I can always use the ubuntu CDROM to do the install. Any suggestions?
Yes, I'm on a wireless network. I've tried all the tools you mentioned and others but I still can't get a connection to internet. I get the wireless part up on eth1 and by using "dhclient eth1" I get some things to happen, but I can't ping a thing. The only way I've been successful is to boot from the CDROM then execute nm-applet from the system tray. The network comes up just fine, I can ping things, run firefox, etc. It won't help me to run apt-get install and update here because I'm not in the partition where my dell ubuntu is installed. I looked at the information in syslog after starting the network from nm-applet. I couldn't manually duplicate all that goes on to get the network up in a million years. So, I'm down to my 2nd last option which is to run the dell script files to hopefully recreate the system they shipped me. I'll be keeping mu fingers crossed that this works. I've managed to get most of all the configuration files, etc. that I want to keep onto an external hard drive, so at least I won't be starting from zero.
