Cable Internet / Changing Computers

I will be receiving a new dimension 4300 sometime next week. Should I be able to get my current Cable Internet service to work on the new system simply by plugging the cable modem into the ethernet card? ...or will I need to call the cable company to come and reinstall the service?

Thanks for your feedback!

I used Road Runner with cable modem connected to a Linksys ethernet card on a computer that was recently replaced by a Dell 8200 desktop. When I connected the modem to the ethernet card included with the 8200, I couldn't make it work properly at all. So, I pulled that card and installed my old Linksys ethernet card and connected the cable modem, and we were back on line as before. I say "we", because my wife and I share the same Road Runner connection to my computer through a home network. I can't explain why the Dell-provided ethernet card in the new 8200 failed to work, but I suspect it may have been that I didn't make a concerted effort to get it to work, or, perhaps I should have reinstalled it. Anyway, you should not have any problems and should be back online by simply connecting your cable modem to the card included in your 4300. I was almost at the point of calling my cable provider before I hit upon the idea of switching ethernet cards. You shouldn't have to call them at all; just plug it in and you ought to be instantly connected.

You shouldn't need to have the cable company come out and reinstall. Some cable companies require that you use the computer name assigned when the connection was originally installed. If that is the case, just make sure that when you set up the connection on your new computer, you give it the computer name that was originally assigned by the cable company. If you set up all the network settings exactly the same as on your old computer, everything should work just fine.

If you have a router, YES. Otherwise, NO. If you do not have a router you will have to enter the name and workgroup for your computer under network in the control panel.
