cpu speed

I have a xps gen 3 and Im getting tired of the loud noise coming from it when I play any type of games. Ive always had the problem since day 1 and was told by cs that its a common problem. My cpu is 3.4 but its rated at 5.0.  Im thinking the speed of the cpu is causing the fans to run louder. Is there anyway to just make the clock speed 3.4?  Any help would be greatly appreciated..Tired of having a jet in my game room.

XPS gen 3

p4 3.4 clocking at 5.0

2gig cosair ddr2 (533mhz)

160gig WD 7200rpm

8800gs 256mb

460w ps

( before upgrading video card, I still was getting the loudness. When I got it a year or so came with 6800gt_

It would help if you can post a bit more specs of your system.

Well, first off, I'd go into the bios and reset the processor speed to default or auto or whatever your choices are to get it back to stock speed.  That will probabely help alot with the fan noise.  It's probabely running pretty hot.  When you start the computer, I think it says press F2 for setup, thats where you need to go.

It doesnt allow me to change the clock speed. I think in dell's comp you cant change if you want to overclock or underclock it.  Maybe I should do a bios update. Ver is AO3. Would HT cause the system fans get louder when gaming?

How did you determine your processor is running at 5 gig? There is no overclocking options so unless you modded the system some how it can only run at stock speeds.

You could update your bios.  Latest version for Gen 3 is A07.

After looking at the manual and service manual for your computer, I don't think your pc is running at 5 gig.  Since the bios doesn't allow for any overclocking.  You might want to open up your case and remove the shroud around the processor and make sure the heat sink colling fins aren't clogged with any dirt.  Other than that, my gen 2 does the same thing.  The fans automatically speed up or slow down depending on the load.
