Dell Optiplex G1
Okay, so basically, all Slot 1 computers are going to the entire project of an upgrade to Pentium III. All PCs are good to go and I assume that this PC will do.
Now, if I insert a Pentium III 600MHz 100MHZ FSB, will it work?
The current specs are:
Intel Pentium II 400MHZ
128MB RAM
4.2GB HDD
40X CD ROM
That 2MB onboard card
I want to make sure I just don't burn money into flames. Also, I went for the CPU support and in a list, created by users, the computer model was there, but I would like to confirm it. If it needs a special heatsink, I know how to go around. I'm really good with modifying the way they function.
I know that my board contains the second version, so it can take the 500MHZ, but also, that 44BX is a good one. It can take up to 850MHZ, from what Intel said.
- Well, there is also a Slot T adaptor for that too. Apparantly, If I use a Tualatin core, the clock ratio would be locked at x13 or x14. All I'd need would be to arage the FSB, in my case, would be 100MHZ. But, if the 600MHZ would work, I'd look to push that guy to 750 if I could.But like you said, it may work or may not work depending on the BIOS. I will look at it today, and see what's the BIOS version. If it's lower than A07, do you know where I can get the BIOS flash update?I'll look also for what he did, because that chipset is amazingly capable to handle very fast CPUs.

You can't overclock the 600 in the G1 by changing the multiplier settings; you can only run it at the stock FSB/multiplier. (OK there's some software utilities to allow mild overclock, but since they overclock the PCI and other buses they usually aren't worth the hassle...). All the documentation, manuals, drivers and bioses for the G1 are on the Dell web site; just go to support.dell.com and enter your asset tag; or select the correct model from the pull down list. Powerleap used to make a slot 1 adaptor for the Tualtins as well, but I believe they have stopped production.peterfelgate_ce40d3

As I said, I do not know which bios version, if any, might inhibit the faster processors on the G1. My advice is to just try it, making sure you retain the existing case fan.Message Edited by peterfelgate on 12-20-200604:07 AM
- Oh, that fan will stay there. I'll have also the other one spinning with Y cables, or, if I'm lucky to find a three prong plug for it.The only thing I;m a bit worried is that Dell is horrible when it comes to PSU wattage. It's only a 135W, but, I think it will be alright...considering that my friend's PC is a PIII, 128MB RAM, 6.4GB HDD, and all that stuff, and it's being powered by an 85W PSU.
- Hi, Im new here. thought i'd throw in my experiences lol Right, I recently acquired a few Optiplex G1 units with the slot 1/Celeron 433 config and I'm trying to make it run on a P3 Coppermine 800mhz/100fsb socket370 using a slocket adapter. The only trouble I'm having is it goes like stink for about 5 mins then just shuts itself down. when i reboot i get a "previous fan failure" message. Im using a heatsink/fan off a socket 370 cely500 i had lying about hotwired into the existing connector. Ive tried the motherboard jumper on 400 and 500 and it seems to last a bit longer on 500 but i was just wondering if i'm fighting a losing battle here. Im using the bios version 10 and 192mb ram Thanks in advance for any advice from anyone who can help Is it possible to backwards-flash the bios and if so does anyone have v7 because the only version i see is v10

After a bit of experimenting I have a Pentium III 800 running a treat on a Optiplex G1 that used to be a Celeron 433 slot 1 hehehe
Used original fan on top of socket 370 heatsink and set slocket jumper to "force 100hz overclock"
The other jumper I have set on the 500mhz setting.
Still running bios v10
The slocket brand is 370SPD
That job lot of P3 800s is gonna come in handy after all :) - I dont know if Tualtin processors will work or indeed if any 133fsb will but you can go up to 1gig p3 that i have been told the stock mobo only supports up to 100mhz FSB and seems to default to 66 which is why i had to use the adapter to force the change. you can find the adapters on ebay for about £3-£5 so well worth it imho. use keyword "slocket" as a guide 5x socket 370 800mhz p3s cost me the grand sum of £13 lol
