UNSOLVED
Dimension 8250
I just purchased a Dell 8250 with a Pentium 4 2.66 ghz, etc.
I have had some very bad performance problems with this machine. When I go to click on an icon the desktop, it can take up to ten seconds to load a program like Internet Explorer. Other programs can take longer. I have defragged to no avail. Sometime when I click an icon, it takes a few seconds for it to even aknowledge that I clicked it.
I contacted Dell Support and they told me to reinstall... what a pain in the @ss.
Any suggestions?

Have you checked Add/Remove Programs to see if you have the Q811493 hotfix installed? It's known to cause the kind of slow performance issue you describe.
Thanks Namek, that's the one I was referring to, but couldn't remember it's number. Although one newsgroup said you could remove it, on attempting to do so a warning came up stating that removing this could result in Outlook, and several Office programs not functioning or working correctly. So I left it, and guess we will just have to wait for MS to reply with a fix or patch. I am seeing a delay in certain programs responding slowly (about 10 secs.) on opening, but not always.

YIKES!!! It shows a list of almost ALL (not just office) my progs when I hit uninstall and says they all might not work. Is this true?

- Zachman123,
For some reason many Microsoft UninstallShield APIs are written with this type of warning. In my experience they tend to be more scare tactic than substance, although there are times when such warnings fulfill themselves. Judging from the number of people who have uninstalled Q811493 without suffering any ill effects I'm confident you have nothing to worry about. Zachman123
