I have a Dell Dimension 8100 System with Windows ME installed. I also have Norton Anti-Virus installed. Here is my problem:

I have tried to install at least 5 different computer games (Max Payne; Patrician; et. al.) and the first step is for the game software to identify which version of DirectX I presently have installed. After the game software detects, it notifies me that in order to ruin the game, it first must install Directx v.8. When it initiates the install for DirectX, I get the message on-screen that says "Searching for DirectX Runtime Components and updating as necessary. This may take a few minutes." After that, the message stays on the screenm and DirectX does not load...ever. I have left it on overnight (9.5 hours) and still DirectX will not load. What is the problem? Could part of the problem be the Norton Anti-Virus software????
