hardware problems
Need help please, I have an xps 420 that when I do a reboot the system looses? the media card reader and the flight controller. Both do not show up in the device manager. But when I do what I call a hard start everything is normal and the hardware shows up in the device manager. Have gone through Dell support and have replaced the media card reader but no change. I am running vista ultimate. Thanks for any replies.

Not sure what you mean by reboot and hard start. There can be problems with vista returning from Sleep and Hibernation. The default for the screen shutdown button in vista is Sleep, not reboot or turn off. You can change that to Shutdown in Power Schemes, change Advanced Settings. Make sure you have all the critical updates, some of which solved many Sleep problems like this. Updating the vista drivers for the hardware with problems might also help.

Thanks fireberd tried new chipset didn't work. If I use the mouse to restart the pc the hardware goes missing but when I use the mouse to shutdown the system then push the power button on all the hardware shows back up. Tried all new drivers even the os disk to do a startup repair but no luck.211

That is most likely a logic chip (IC) that is not getting reset when you just restart. But when power off and then back on it is getting reset and that is why it's working. As the individual logic chips are not replaceable it means a new motherboard.
You have two options, live with the problem or get a new motherboard, and if it's still in warranty work with the Dell tech to convince the tech that the motherboard is the problem.
The power reset to clear a problem was a big part of computer troubleshooting years ago, haven't seen much of it lately.

Thats what I was thinking a new motherboard, The time it takes to go through dell tech support ( several hours ) and to line up a technician to make a house call I would probably be better off living with it. Even though it is under warranty. Thanks for the reply and to mary thank you as well.

One thing to try, reload the Intel chipset drivers and see if that helps as one of the fixes is for USB port issues. HERE
However, the key is that when you just reboot the problem is there but if you power off and back on it's OK. That says a hardware device is not being reset with the "reboot" but when you power off and back on it is.
If reloading the chipset drivers does not fix it, I would suspect a hardware problem on the motherboard.
