5150 Hyperthreading & SP2

Hi,

I have recently a) had a replacement motherboard & b) installed XP SP2,  since then if I work the machine *really* hard, after an indeterminate amount of time, the fan will slow down (after being on full) and the machine effectively runs at half speed, even though it reports still running at 3.2GHz and 100% cpu load.  Only a reboot will get it back once it has gone into this state.

If I turn off hyperthreading it doesn't do this.  I have tried running the fan util (I8KfanGUI) and it makes no difference.

I have noticed that since installing SP2 the processor drivers are now SP2, hence I think this is causing it, however I cannot install the specific processor drivers off the downloads as it reports it does not support this OS,  it installs on SP1 only.  Is there an SP2 version coming out, or can I get it installed somehow?

Cheers

Alastair

How would you know this is actually happening, running at half speed? I don't think running at 100% cpu load is very normal though. What BIOS are you using?

    Hi,

I am guessing at the half speed on two counts, the job that it is running when it does it suddenly jumps to twice the expected time it estimates to finish (and it is usually very accurate), the machine becomes slow to respond.  Secondly the fan slows down, so there is no-way it can still be running at full speed because it would melt down.

    I am on A36 bios.

Hmm, maybe you can try looking around the the BIOS forum. Some people also seem to have problems with this version of the BIOS.
