BIOS PASSWORD PROBLEM

Hi,

I have inspiron 6400, warrenty period is over.

The problem : The bios doesnt load and then asks for a password. i dnt remember keeping a password, considering someone might have accessed my laptop and kept the password i have tried numberous time to remove it, even tried to take out the bios cell and keep it out for 30 mins and then putting it back. Still it  dint work, it still the same - NOT LOADING BIOS INTIALLY AND ASKING FOR BIOS PASSWORD. Tried calling dell customer care but i always find the assistants to be busy till i think of hanging up .

Please suggest me what the problem is and  how should i fix it. i am totally without my laptop, i need to work on it. :(

Thanks,

Puneet

Contact Dell. They can send you a master password.

There are programs, claiming to be Dell master password generators, available for download on the Internet (probably most of them are trojans:emotion-1:).

Just try "dell bios password" in google and you should be able to find plenty of them. Try at your own risk.

I just bought a Dell e1505 Inspiron laptop from a pawn shop.   At boot up this password issue pops up all day.   It won't go to setup  or anything.    I called customer care and told them i don't know the previous owner but i do have the pawn shop address and phone number.I entered the tag# and service Code information and now it may take 10 days before i hear back from Dell.   There must be a quicker way.

Dell will do the unlock from what i understand.   Am i wrong or is there another workaround.

    Thank you.

Call the post-warranty number in your area.  There is a charge  (about $50US) for the service, and you should have your documentation handy as they will ask you to verify ownership.

Return the system to the store - they will not assist other than the registered owner.  If you have any hope of finding that person, the shop that sold you the system is your best chance.

No one here can, and you'll find your post deleted if you don't edit it to remove the service tag number.  Call Dell.

About the bios password problem.  I saw this recommendation in another forum:  "Carefully remove the CMOS battery and leave it out for about 120 seconds. This will flush the CMOS memory which stores the BIOS password and all other configuration."

Would removing the motherboard battery as recommended be harmful to the computer?

    No, BUT:

On many notebooks it's soldered, so doing so isn't trivial.

Also, since the password is stored in flash memory, removing the battery WILL NOT remove the password.
