Memory Upgrade Problem
I have an Inspiron 3800 with 256mb RAM. I wanted to double the RAM, and was given another 256mb that is exactly like the original. I installed the new RAM, BIOS recognized it, no problems. After about 15 minutes of use, it blue screened on me. I swapped the memory sticks with each other...same problem after about 15 minutes. I went back to the one original memory stick...no problems. I went to just the one new memory stick...also no problems. But every time I try using the second memory socket it works for about 15 minutes and then blue screens. Is it possible the DIMM B socket is bad? If so, can just the socket be replaced?
- It's possible. Locate the blue and white Dell drivers and utilities CD that came with the system, and boot from it. Run memory tests. If one module fails, move it to the other socket. If the problem travels with it, the DIMM is faulty. If it doesn't, the socket is faulty.
The socket is not replaceable outside of having a surface mount rework shop do it - which would probably cost more than replacing the entire unit with another used 3800.
