Monitoring System Temperature Question

I was on my laptop recently, and I just noticed that it would get a little warm around the touchpad. I know that this really isn't anything to worry about, but I was just wondering if there was a tool or app that could monitor my system's temperature. I know that Intel has a monitor that monitors fan speed etc. but it seemed to me that the particular program was only for Windows XP, is there anything designed for vista or provided by Dell? Or will this one work? http://www.intel.com/design/motherbd/active.htm

There's a gaggle of them, simply search this forum for temp. Here's a couple:

    Download CoreTemp here: http://www.alcpu.com/CoreTemp/

    and GPU-Z here: http://www.techpowerup.com/downloads/SysInfo/GPU-Z/

    Cheers!

You haven't mentioned which model XPS you've got, but assuming you're referring to your GPU temp's, 50°c - 60°c is perfectly acceptable.

My two 8800M GTX's are currently sitting at just 46°c (idle) - but it's generally accepted that the M1730 has better cooling than most other laptops anyway.. plus I'm using a set of 'Cool Feet' and a laptop cooler (Zalman ZM-NC2000).

If yours is also a M1730, and temp's are getting up to the high 50's at idle, then you might want to look into improving the cooling, by (i.e.) raising the back (particularly), and maybe cleaning out the fans?

My M1530's GPU (Nvidia 8600) is currently sitting at 65C, and I haven't even been doing much. However, it was just sitting on the carpet, so that could have something to do with the higher temp. What is the reccomended idle temp? what about the highest SAFE temp?

Also,  I downloaded the gpu monitor from the techPowerUp site, but after I download it, I cannot ever find it again to monitor, where does this download to?
