USB Connections not functioning

Inspiron 9200 running XP. My stepson was online and says the computer shut down on its own and now none of my usb connections function. I have looked in device mgr and it reports that all are functioning properly. I was using only two of the back connections for a mouse and a printer before the issue and have had no probs for over a year. Any help? Hoping it not the motherboard. Oh, I have tried uninstalling the devices and plugging back into the ports. There appears to be no comms at all.

    I had the exact same thing happen to me. I also have an inspiron 9200. I was online and left my computer for a few hours. When I got home, my computer was off and when I rebooted it none of the USB ports were working. Like colespider I was only using the 2 USB ports on the back for a mouse and a printer. I have checked the drivers and they are up to date. I have also run the diagnostics program fromm the boot menu and they pass all tests. Does anyone have any further suggestions that could could help solve this problem?

    Go into Device Manager, uninstall all USB Root Hubs, and reboot. Windows should reinstall the USB Root Hubs.  Let us know if this works.

    Thanks for the reply, I did as you suggested and the reinstall did happen, however the symptoms remain. The device reportsts that all are working properly but there seems to be no power or comms from any of the ports. I tried to plug in the printer and mouse to each of the ports and none recognize their presence. Any other suggestions?

    Thank you again for the reply. I also tried your suggestion, and the USB root hubs did reinstall as you said but they are still not working. Same situation as colespider.

    Go into device manager and open up the USB section. Right click on the USB root hub and select properties. Then select the tab "Power Management". Uncheck the selection "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power". Try to do this to all your USB root hubs. See if that helps.

    under USB Controllers in the device manager.
     
    The restart the computer, but only if it's done finding some of the devices. It should find everything else.
