USB port not working

My USB ports don't seem to recognize what is attached.  I've done a diagnostic and it passes.  The ports will power-up an external HD but it does not recognize it.  Same for a mouse.  They no longer work.  The keyboard and track-pad does.  I've updated all drivers and BIOS.  Another confusing issue which may be related, or not, it that when I plugged in the power source an error message said that it is not recognized and that charging may not work.  It does supply power but I can't seem to start the computer on battery alone.

I'm running Win 10 and it worked just fine.  I've scanned for spyware and viruses and nothing (except cookies which I delete)

I like to suggest you use the Troubleshooting tool on the system:

    1. Go to Control Panel

    2. Look under System And Security, click on Find And Fix Problems.

    3. On the left side, click view all

    4. First, click Hardware And Device. If that one doesn't fix it, try Network adapter. If any of the window updates have fail or you are have any problems with window updates then click on the window update. Remember, any fail windows update could cause problems with the system.

I have checked under the Device Mgr and both controllers show the yellow exclamation mark.  I've updated the drivers.  I've disabled them and then re-enabled them.  I've deleted them and had the computer re-install on start-up.  Didn't help.  Bios is updated.  Ran the diagnostics and everything passed.  I specifically ran just the USB again and it passed.

Thank you.  I did try your suggestions but unfortunately, none of them corrected the problem.
