LCD screen fonts & ClearType
ClearType improves the readability of text on LCD screens, the letters appear smooth, not jagged, yet the edges remain sharp.
ClearType is a form of sub-pixel font rendering that draws text using a pixel's red-green-blue (RGB) components separately instead of using the entire pixel. When the pixel is used in this way, horizontal resolution theoretically increases 300 percent.
For more information, see What is ClearType and
Technical Overview of ClearType Filtering
.
Tuning ClearType makes an adjustment to Windows XP's 'contrast' or 'gamma' value set for your screen. For more information on gamma, see the
Optimal ClearType Filtering Sample Page
.
NOTE: If you installed Windows XP yourself, ClearType will be turned off by default. Computer manufacturers that pre-install Windows XP have the option of turning it on or off by default.
How to turn on ClearType in Windows XP
Go to Display Properties > Appearance tab > Effects > Check 'Use the following method to smooth edges of screen fonts' and select ClearType.
Also, System Properties > Advanced tab > Performance Settings > Check 'Smooth edges of screen fonts'.
Download Microsoft's
ClearType Tuner PowerToy
or use the
online ClearType Tuner
.
