Not all 17" FP have physical rotation capability, I think only the 1703 and 1704, the 172 does not. If you have these and integrated video, e.g. Intel Extreme Graphics, then you will need to use a rotation software.
If you had a video card, ATI or Nvidia, you wouldn't, both their drivers include rotation feature and control. But the Integrated Intel software does not.
