internet security

I am new to the wireless internet.Everything hooked up ok and I like it. I am wondering about the security. I have a Dell Wireless 1350 External Card(802.11 b/g,54Mbps) and a NetgearWGR614 54 Mbps Wireless Firewall Router. In the instructions it stated I needed a key. I don't have any account numbers on my computers and when I do need to put one in, I am at a secure site. Could someone still see what I am putting in on a secure site?Do I really need the Key?

If you are talking about securing your wireless network, the network key is found in the router, which you then use to configure your computer to connect to it (like a password).

I read all the articles and web sites that replied to my message. I went to my laptop and set up a key for security. Now my laptop is telling me there is no internet in my area. I was getting  wireless internet on my laptop before I did this. I was told I need to set up the same key on my desktop so my laptop can get through. How do I do this?Orrrrrr, what do I need to do?

Did you set the key up on the router first?  Once the key is entered in the router setup, you then need to find the connection to this wireless network on any computer that connects to it by wireless and enter the same key there.  Did you try following the directions in any of the articles?

I set the key up on the laptop first. Yes , I did read the reports on the messages sent to me.I know just enough to want to try something new but can really mess it up.I realize now I should have set up the key on the desktop first. How do I undo this and start over?

Is this desktop connecting to the router by wireless?  If not, then it does not need to be set up on the desktop.  But, you may need to use the desktop to connect to the router to set it up on the router.

I'm just having a problem here with the way you are saying it - "I think I have to set the key on the desktop first, then do it on laptop.Any help is appreciated", and I may be misundertanding what you are saying.   You have to use the desktop to set the key on the router.  There is no key to set on the desktop if it is not connecting to the router through a wireless connection.  Only the wireless connections need to have the key entered.   Once you have entered the key in the security settings on the router, you then need to enter that exact same key on the wireless connection on the laptop.

The cable is hooked to modem, the modem is hooked to the router and the router is hooked to the desktop by an ethernet cable.I understood ,I think, that I had to go through a computer that was on a wired internet. Yesterday, I found the path I needed to get back to the router and disable the security. I did that and I got my  wireless laptop back online. I am going to try setting up the security again. I think I have to set the key on the desktop first, then do it on laptop.Any help is appreciated.

You understand right. I think that is the answer. Now to do it. Thanks!
