network connection with long cables

I have three Dimension 4600 (win XP) that are connected to a switch (PowerConnect 2016). To the switch is connected also a PowerEdge 700 (Win 2003 Small Business Server) and a Latitude D800.

If I use a short cable to connect to the switch (< 4 meters) there is no problem: I can see all the computers and the folders inside. If I use a long cable (15 - 20 meters) the Dimension 4600 can't see the network (XP says that they are connected - the network icon is on - but I can't see the other computers).

If I use the long cables on the Latitude D800 there are no problems (so it seems that is not a cable problem).

The TCP/IP configuration is the same on all the computers.

Someone can help me?

Many thanks

Stefano

Is the XP Firewall tunred off on the 4600 machines?  It seems that it is off on the laptop.

No, the Dell PC's are not XP firewall protected. But I think that the problem is the length of the cable and not the firewall configuration (a firewall works regurarly with long or short cables).

I read on the cable: GALAXY E200579 CM 75°C UTP CAT 5e 4PR 24AWG VERIFIED (UL) CSA CMG  75°C LL81924 ETL VERIFIED TO TIA/EIA-568-B.2 PATCH CABLE. Do you think it's not a correct cable?

CAT5 is good for up to 100 meters so it's not the cable as long as you are using CAT5 or CAT5E UTP or USTP cabing configured as regular patch cable and not a crossover cable.
