Telephone interrupts wireless internet

I'm sure this sounds silly but I had to get a new phone and the one I got interrupts my wireless service. I tried changing channels on the phone and that didn't work. Any suggestions?

Try changing the channels on your router.  For instance, if your router is currently using channel 6 move to channel 11 or 1.

Well I looked all over the router and couldn't find a switch on my router.

Actually, this is a "configuration parameter" of the router.  To change, you must "log in" to your router and change the channel.

If you would let us know what type, model and version router you have, I'm quite sure, one of us has that model and can walk you thru the steps required.

    Think I can remeber linksys...

With your phone switched off, load up internet explorer, check you have a live web connection, type the following address in the address bar

    192.168.1.1

if that doesn't work try ...2.1

Then log in as user=admin with either no password at all or 'admin'.  First thing to do is set a secure password or someone else can take control of your network.  Be careful what you change in there!  If in doubt just log out before clicking on apply / ok.

Find the bit about channel and SSID, select a channel between 1 and 10 (12 and 13 don't work on all wireless cards so I'd avoid them, 11 is used by every router by default so avoid it to get less interference). Consider a peronalised SSID (network name) but keep it short (7-10 chars) and no funny chars like - or _ just letters and numbers (there is a complicated reason for this).

Try find a channel which doesn't get upset when you use your phone.  Then read about WPA security and consider setting it up, otherwise your network can be accessed by anybody (you might want this, are there other people within 100m of your router?).

    Hope this helps, Dan

Well I managed to change the channels on my router but didn't help.  I took the silly phones back and got new ones. Worked like a charm, no more interuptions. Thanks for all the help though!
