Go to SolutionOptiplex Micro Plus 7010 : Audio Input Issue
Hello,
When I try to play my analog cassette tape player through the 1/8" mini jack input on the front of the computer, it doesn't work. (I select the "line in" setting from the pop-up menu when I plug the cord into the computer.)
Any help would be appreciated.

Finally found the "listen" tab" and fixed the setting. Watched a brief YouTube video that had me access Sound controls via mmsys.cpl This resulted in a different window than was available through the regular Settings menu, or doing a right-click on the volume icon menu. (Neither of those avenues produced the "listen" option.)

I'm using Windows 11. So, the popups / tabs are a little different from what you described / displayed. Even so, your guidance set me on the right path. I believe I've got the input set properly, now. ("microphone test" shows a good response on the visual sound bar.) Now, the problem is... I'm not hearing the cassette deck sound through my computer speaker when I play it. I looked at output settings but couldn't figure out what to do. (Don't see a "listen" tab.) Any tips on that?(edited)

You may have to select "Allow" for "Allow apps and Windows to use this device for audio.
If still no go, right click speaker icon in taskbar again. Click on Sound Mixer. Available volumes will open up. You should see a volume for your speakers.
The only other thing I can think of is download Waves MaxxAudio Pro and see what you can do with it. It's pretty simple.
Hopefully something works out there. I haven't had to deal with single jacks for input/output. Is the jack in the rear output or input only?

Even though this might be different in Win11 - Right click speaker in taskbar. The next window that opens should already be on the Playback tab. Click on your speakers.

Thanks for the help, but I can't seem to get anything to work. The computer is managing just fine for digitizing analog sound input using an editing program (Audacity). In other words, I can record the input, and then playback the recording just fine, but I can't hear the actual input, whether recording, or not, even though the display bar in the settings window shows the volume fluctuations while I'm playing the input.

Sorry to see it's still not working like it should. I've used Nero Wave Edit and Audacity.
I'm out of ideas to directly solve the problem. Makes me wish I was there to have a go at it.
However, there's the "Get Help Now" button on the bottom right. May be somebody with Win11 will chime in.

Even though I have Win10, I dug around on my PC. "Listen to this device" should be the only barrier I know of if it's unchecked. Make sure it's checked for all shown input devices, including line-in.
In my 1st post, I mistakenly said "microphone" instead of "line-in."

What have you all tried? Did you try changing the following audio setting to "Allow"?

Right click speaker icon in taskbar. Open "Sounds." A small window should open. Select Record tab. Double-click microphone icon. Another window opens. Select Listen tab. Check box that says "Listen to this device." It is unchecked by default.
