Latitude E6530 Dell Data Protection - Dell ControlVault - Recovering hard disk with self encription
I am using a Dell Notebook Latitude E6530 with a Samsung SSD 850 Pro and Windows 10 Professional. For security reasons the self encryption mode of the Samsung SSD was used (password for SSD access was set and a menue entry within the Dell Bios was available for the HDD Password). Additionally the Admin Password and System Password was set in the Dell Bios. Therefore only the Admin Password was necessary to pass the pre-boot-authentication process before the Windows login.
Now i wanted to upgrade the Dell Bios from Version A18 to A20. Because the update program asked for a password and neither the system nor the admin password worked, i reseted / deleted all passwords in the Dell Bios (for admin and system, and thereby also the HDD password i assume). After reeboot the Dell DDP Software (which i installed months before but wasn’t really active in the past, i assume because of the existing security settings in the Bios ) forced me to safe a „OpalSPKey. .recovery.dat“ file in a DELL-SEC directory on an USB medium.
After the next reeboot the hard disk was not accessible anymore. The error message displayed is „No bootable devices—strike F1 to retry boot, F2 for setup utility Press F5 to run onboard diagnostics“.
Some screenshots from the Samsung Magican Software show the actual status of the drive. It seems that the security mode switched from Class0 (with password) to TCG Opal. Also an Secure Erase is not possible anymore for the drive. No volumes are visible on the drive and no changes to the partitioning table are possible at all.
If anybody could help me how to access the drive once more (the former password of the drive is available and also the OpalSPKey… file), that would be great. Thanks for reading until here …

ich konnte das Thema inzwischen mit Hilfe von Justin aus Texas lösen (http://en.community.dell.com/members/dell_2d00_justin-c) :-) ...
Der Weg über das Windows ADK (www.microsoft.com/.../details.aspx ist schon genau der richtige. Nur muss vor der Generierung des ISO Images für die Boot Disk inkl. dem "DELL Opal SED Recovery Utility" noch das von DELL bereitgestellte "Windows Recovery Kit" bekannt gemacht werden. Mittels des damit ebenfalls ausgeliefertem Batch Skriptes (Build-SED-WinPE-4.0.bat) wird dann das ISO Image "WinPE-4.0-SED-x86" generiert, welches im Anschluss auf eine CD gebrannt werden kann.
Die Sourcen für das von DELL stammende "Windows Recovery Kit" kann man über Justin anfordern und dann nach Bereitstellung der Zugangsdaten über das Secure Self-Service File Delivery Portal (ssfdexternal.dell.com/) herunterladen.
Die Entschlüsselung der Festplatte nach dem Booten des betroffenen PCs mit Hilfe der erstellten CD und dem vorhandenen OpalSPKey. .recovery.dat file ist dann ein Kinderspiel.
Ich hoffe das hilft denjenigen weiter, die ebenfalls in die missliche Lage kommen nicht mehr auf ihre Daten zugreifen zu können.

please try the Erase in DOS mode:
So create a bootable USB Stick to run Secure Erase.
If there are any issues with the DOS MODE: I found a guide to Fix IT when DOS Mode Faiiled:

Hallo,
vielen Dank schon mal für den Hinweis. Gibt es evtl. die Möglichkeit mit Hilfe eines DELL Tools und der „OpalSPKey. .recovery.dat“ Datei die Platte auch wieder zu entschlüsseln ohne den Inhalt zu verlieren ?

Wenn du alles(Passwörter und Keys) noch vorliegen hast kannst du deine Festplatte wieder entschlüsseln.
Im englischen Forum gibt es dazu schon einen gelösten Thread:

Sollten dir Passwörter oder Keys verloren gegangen sein dann bleibt nur noch der Secure Erase übrig.

Hallo Martin,
so hatte heute mal die Luft an dem Thema weiter zu arbeiten.
Habe auch das angegebene ADK mit den genannten Komponenten installiert (Download der Komponenten allerdings nur in "Deutsch" möglich, weiß nicht ob dadurch der Content anders ist als bei der englischen Version, ein Hinweis auf das "DELL Opal SED Recovery Utility" erscheint jedenfalls nicht). Siehe auch Anlage zu der ADK Installations-Auswahl.
Daraus dann analog dem Artikel https://technet.microsoft.com/de-de/library/dn293200.aspx eine entsprechende Boot CD über das ADK erstellt. Diese bootet auch einwandfrei bis in eine "command shell" hinein, aber das "DELL Opal SED Recovery Utility" wird nicht gestartet. Ich bin mir wie gesagt auch gar nicht sicher, dads es Bestandteil des x64 Images ist welches über das ADK generiert wurde.
Wie heißt denn der ausführbare file (*.exe) zu dem "DELL Opal SED Recovery Utility" bzw. kann man das Tool noch irgendwo anders separat herunterladen ?
