You did not mention your operating system but this procedure should work.

Dell suggests...

Installing Older Windows Printer Drivers in Windows 10

Try this procedure and see if the printer installs.

First run Delete Print Jobs to remove any stuck print job in the queue.

Disconnect the printer.

Hit the Windows key and the x keys at the same time, programs and features, your printer, uninstall.

Restart your computer. Make sure the printer is removed. Manual Printer Driver Removal

Download the Vista 32-bit drivers for Windows 7, 8, 8.1 and 10 32-bit or the Vista 64-bit drivers for Windows 7, 8, 8.1 and 10 64-bit. Install the Vista drivers in the Vista Compatibility mode you’ll get a message, the printer is not connected. Connect the printer at this time (powered on).

Many thanks, but before following your proposal....

I fogot to add that my operating system is Vista. Also, having not found the printer driver s/w on the pc, I was asked to install it from the disc supplied with the printer. Unfortunately I purchased the printer in the days when I had  a Dell pc running XP, so the printer is not compatible with Vista, hence nothing useful on the disc!

Does this make any difference?

If you recently installed the operating system, try reading...

How to Download and Install Drivers in the Correct Order It's important to install the Dell System Software and this chipset drivers first or the rest of the drivers will fail to install.Start with the Dell System Software(if applicable) then the chipset drivers and install everything in order.

Try the drivers I have listed in the Dell 926 Photo All-In-One Printer owners thread (W7) I had to search a long time ago for 64-bit drivers, when Vista was just new. The 64-bit drivers, if you have a 64-bit system, are also compatible with Windows 7.

Did you download the drivers, then try to install it? I think the description may be incorrect. The R153956.exe is the file that I see when I hoover over the link I created.

I can find other drivers, if you need them but want to make sure before I post any drivers.

Below is what I found at your 'owners thread (W7)', apart from a suggested link to other drivers.

This driver is specifically for FAX. Is there such a simple specific one for the Printer function?
