adding a second internal drive

want to add a second drive to my Dimension 3100.

I have received a 1tb ATA device.

When I plug it in and connect the ata data cable, the device does not show up not even in device manager.

Yet when I connect it via usb there is no problem.

Assuming that ATA, means Serial ATA [aka SATA].

How to install an additional SATA hard internally in the E310/3100:

The E310 motherboard has two SATA connnectors [SATA-0 & SATA-1], but for a second hard drive, you will need to buy the plastic tray to hold the drive and a SATA [90* x 180*] data cable, there should a spare power connector inside the case.

You can buy the plastic tray/bracket HERE for $4.99

A SATA [90* x 180* x 24"] data cable, will be required, similar as the unit shown HERE, try to buy the cable from a local computer store, to save on the S&H.

The additional SATA hard drive needs to be connected to SATA-1

After you've physically installed the second SATA hard drive, enter the setup and check that the hard drive is set to "Auto" [on].

HOW TO INSTALL THE HARD DRIVE

    MOTHERBOARD LAYOUT

    E310/3100 SYSTEM SETUP

For windows XP to recognize the second hard drive, it must be partitioned and formatted.

THESE are generic instructions for installing an additional hard drive using Windows XP Disk Management, they are by Seagate, but apply to all brands.
