Major problems with system not recognizing DVD-RW as a writable unit
Last week I had som major issues with my DVD-unit Hitatchi/LG HL-DT-ST DVD+-RW GWA 4164B. The unit wouldn't be recognized as a burning device. I got tired of I all and today bought a new unit namely Samsung DVD-+RW 18x DL SH-S182D.
System: Dell 9150, P4 3,2, 1024 Mb, 250 Gb SATA, Radeon X600 256 MB, internal card reader, no Floppy, use DVD-discs FujiFilm 4,7 GB, up to 16x.
I removed the GWA 4164B (jumper set to CS) and installed the new SH-S182D (jumper set to Master as it should be according to the Samsung manual). Sadly it´s all pretty much the same.
- Initially the unit was recognized as DVD-RAM (D:)
- After installing the latest firmware from Samsung the unit is now recognized as CD-unit (D:)
- When checking the units properties the Recordning-tab is not shown.
- When trying to burn in WMP I get the message: "No CD or DVD burner was identified. Press F5 to update WMP". Pressing F5 doesn't help.
With help from Osprey I went through a whole lot of different possible solutions for the GWA 4164B without success. See link: "Forum Home > Dimension > CD/DVD Devices > DVD problems". Is this a Windows problem more than a DVD-unit specific one?
I also have another issue. Did a change to Deafult Settings in BIOS. The system now finds a "A: Floppy Disk" which is not physically present. How come? Also, on every startup after the Dell-loading page goes down I get a beep and have to choose between F1 (Continue) or F2 (BIOS). How come?
Getting crazy. Help me please!

OK, changed the setting to CS without positive result.Went through Microsoft's support document http://support.microsoft.com/kb/316529 which refers to my problem. Changing the Drivetype to value 2 in HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\CD Burning\Drives results in a cosmetic improvement. Afterwards i the DVD-units Properties, the "Recording" tab is shown. Still though, WMP doesn't recognize the unit as a burning one. In the DVD-units Properties marking the box "Use this unit for writing" doesn't fix it.Another article's interesting, http://support.microsoft.com/kb/883523. Here they explain that this is a known problem and that some file could fix it, a file that will be included in the next XP Service Pack. But since XP on my system was pre-installed by Dell Microsoft refer to them for support. The problem is that my warranty expired.What to do? Try XP Professional? Re-install Windows Home Edition?- You have the option to run PC Restore, which restores the hard drive image exactly as the system came shipped from Dell. See this article for help.
