I'm giving my Dimension 4550 to my hubby when my new Vista Dell arrives this week but now, all of a sudden, the NEC DVD_RW ND 3550A won't burn. It worked fine until it decided not to burn with the message "no disk in drive etc" even though there was a disk. I tried other disks, I uninstalled with Device Manager and rebooted, I opened up the case and disconnected the drive and rebooted, shut down and reconnected the drive and rebooted, checked that DMA is enabled, ran the Help and Support Troubleshooter which says the device is working properly. I took the disks I wanted to burn to another computer and they burnt fine, but not on my NEC. It can read disks and play DVD's and CD's, it just won't burn.
I do not see a NEC 3550A on Dell`s site, if it is a retail drive, have you considered checking for a firmware update. Also maybe uninstalling / reinstalling your burning software, at times a file may become corrupt and this helps.
Best Regards

Sorry to hear that Joy. What software are you using if I may ask?
Best Regards!

Did it come with Nero or maybe Roxio? If it was a bare drive, Nero has a trail version as well as Roxio, you can test the drive with one of these. If it does not work then, then one would lean toward the drive needing replaced.
Best Regards!
