I have a 4600 a few months old with the DVD+RW drive.  I just tried the firmware update from Dell.  After I had downloaded and unzipped the file, and clicked on "Flash", I got the error message, "ND1110GE.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close.  We are sorry for this inconvenience."  The light for access to hard drive and DVD kept flashing for at least 10 minutes, until I did a system restart.  After the reboot, I got message that system had found new device, and had to reboot to get them working properly.

Just before I downloaded the update, I created a system restore point in case I ran into problems.  So I restored to that restore point.  But now it says I am on firmware rev. 10GE which is the new one - I suppose system restore cannot restore a firmware revision.

According to my Control Panel Add/Remove Programs, I did not have either of the two Intel products that needed to be uninstalled first.  And I have not modified the device configuration, so the master/slave issue should not apply.  I was previously on firmware rev 10FD but could find no date for it.  I assumed 10GE was later than 10FD, but could find no way to verify that.

What should I do now?  Is it impossible to go back to how it was before?  Should I try to intall again?  Or just try using the drive and see if it seems to gotten installed despite the error message?
