In the absence of the CD/DVD forum regulars I will take a shot at this: Restart the computer. Does the power light on the drive flash during the restart, indicating the drive is receiving power? If so, during the restart, push the drive open button and see if the drive will eject the disk. Can you access or play the disk that is in the drive otherwise?549

Thank's! I can open it manually! But still doesn't work or open. If I reboot the computer, the led blinks, but it doesn't play the CD which is in the drive (it seems, that no program - recognizes it).549

Good Morning Europa, how are you this fine day ?
We are finally seeing the sunshine in good ol`e Virginia, rain for the last three days and wind gusts between 40 - 50 mph, we had power outages all over the place yesterday.
Hi Nemaza,
At times after a tray jams or does not release the disc for whatever reason, the driver may become corrupt. Also too you may have a Packet Writing program locking the drive for use, such as Sonic`s DLA program.
Lets start with the drivers, click on the CD/RW link in my post and scroll to Section 15, article 1; Section 20, article 3 and run these two.
Do you recall any Code Errors in Device Manager, such as Code 19, 31, 32, 39, 41? If so, same CD/RW link, Section 12, article 10.

Good moring Predator! Thank's! I have deinstalled the Sonic DLA manager, de- and reinstalled the IDE channel and the CD drive. No change. Does not open. (I have not seen any error code, except, that the Windows Explorer stops working, if I try to open the disk, which is in the drive). I have only installed iTunes 7, since it has stopped working.549

Hi Nemaza,
Please go ahead and run the Dell article in Section 12, article 10 of the CD/RW link. Ignore the reference to Roxio. This will at least give you clean filters as well.
I checked Dell`s site for a possible firmware update for the drive, unfortunately there is none.

Hi Predator, thank#s for the new tip! I have followed the description and deleted the filters from the registry. Since then, there is "no life" in the drive anymore (indicator dosn't blink at booting or pushing the open button). Did I do something wrong? Best regards, Nemaza549

Hi Nemaza,
No my friend you did not do anything wrong, the Dell article covers a software issue, cannot physically damage the drive, however the drive may too have simply failed.
May I ask though, is this your only drive, if no, does the other drive work OK?
If yes, shutdown, open the case and reseat the IDE and power cable going to the drive (unplug / replug them, careful with the pins, do not bend them).
