I'm running Windows XP. Have Adware and every time I scan I keep having to delete approximately 16-49 virus's. I think I have hidden file/files that I can't get rid of. Suggestions encouraged as I'm a computer novice compared to most.
Ad-aware does not detect viruses. What you are probably seeing are tracking cookies which are deposited by many sites. If you visit the same sites frequently, that is probably the cause of the number of hits you are seeing with Ad-aware. As long as you routinely delete them it is unlikely that there is any underlying problem.
If Ad-aware is the only spyware detection/removal program you are using it would be a good idea to also run Spybot, which you can download
here. It can detect problem that Ad-aware does not, and conversely.

Be sure to update SpyBot Search and Destory then do a full system scan, after you have done this make sure you use SpyBot's Immunize feature... this will block alot of spyware from being installed in the first place.
