Anti-Virus software

Many of my friends are using the free  version of AVG anti-virus software, at http://free.grisoft.com This free software is for home use only, My Question is,when compared to Norton or McAfee how does this software rate. What are the pro's and con's.   buddee

    Pro's:

    Small footprint
    Daily updates to virus signatures
Trouble free install/uninstall (virtually no complaints on these boards regarding it, compared to Mcafee/NAV)
    Free

    Con's:

Unsupported (hwever they do have a good peer support forum)
Fared poorly in one recent test of WMF-exploit detection: http://blog.ziffdavis.com/seltzer/archive/2006/01/04/39774.aspx

I've used it for 2 years now, trouble-free, and without anything slipping through

yeah, it was a good program. but my dad got me a mcaffee virus protection one of those enterprise editions for free. He said that all employees from citigroup are allowed free virus protection.
NORTON, yeah yeah, its a pain to install and uninstall. i had a big problem, made my pc boot in 20 mins. but got that resolved. Its a good program. Here is the best one in my opinion, Norton internet security suite. Its the best. i was playing starcraft online, some AOL server tried to hack my system, but thanks to norton, it was blocked, AND it traced the machine back to Virginia and some street name. Funny, it was an AOL pc. the bad thing about norton is that is uses to much ram!!

buddee, I don't like AVG free.  if my WMF experiance was any suggestion, these guys aren't good at handling real-time, live threats.  the control interface in the free version is also very limited.  this said, they offer a good price for the 2 year paid version (which gets you more control and more updates).

i recently switched to Avast (also free) and it seems to run well.  i'm just using its basic modules to keep the footprint small, but no complaints so far.  Avast free also runs on x64 (which AVG free doesn't)

    Budee,

i uninstalled norton cause of the problems that developed after a daily
    update, see "refreshing" thread.
Computer has run quicker with avg & firefox/mozzila there still is some leftover
norton/symantec files that can not be uninstalled or deleted. surfing the internet
has been easy/fast. Also microsoft spyware i just install. so far no problem.
but i wont say anything about media center/sonic software and Sony the dvd drive.
    still working the bugs out!
