BOOT-UP PROBLEM WINDOWS XP

When I boot up my dimension 9150 PC the windows XP screen appears (which is normal). Then I get the 'Welcome' screen, but if I don't click my user icon within 10 seconds (I might have gone to make a cup of tea) the screen goes blank and the boot-up process commences again.

Also sometimes when I have clicked the user icon within time, I get the boot-up process.

This is a bit annoying. Any suggestions please?

Did you do a windows update right before all this started? Go to control panel and under users see what all is listed. See if you have one that is Aspenet (Spelling?)

    Hi dbramlet

    thanks for your reply.

I am not very good with computers. I have opened the control panel pane and the only theme listed apertaining to 'users' is user accounts which does not list any files.

I am not sure if this problem occured after a windows download as these happen automatically and the problem has been happening for a few months now.

However I have looked at my windows download history and can see that tthere are a number of files that have been unable to be downloaded (all showing errror code 0x80240017).
does this shed any light on the boot-up problem?

    regards

Under user accounts in control panel you open that and it shows no user accounts and names? Sometimes a windows update does not complete because of a security suite like with a firewall, spyware, and other programs. You could uninstall or delet, (remove) those updates that show errors and then turn off you firewall and do another windows update. But maybe the errors you see were from previous tries and later on they did install. I just am not sure. But for you to see different user accounts at startup then there has to be some listed under the user accounts. You open that up?

All that is shown on the user accounts pane is 'what do you want to change about your account?'

Well, I don't understand and I guess I have never seen this before. When I go to control panel and double click User Accounts it opens and at the bottom it shows the accounts I have on my computer and allows me to select one and then pick a task. So I am lost at this point.

Ok, then if you see this also what user account are listed? Should be at least 2, your name or adminstrator name, and another one that says guest account. Are there more than these listed? That is what we need to know. There must be 2 listed. You have the option to delete an account.

yes that is what I see, but the tasks allowed are what I described earlier i.e. only able to change account details.

thanks anyway for taking the time to respond.

I have done a 'print screen' picture of what I see on screen and saved in word doc. Is there any way I can attach it to this thread?

As I said, I am not very good computer savvy and am unable to paste the .doc.

I will therefore endeavour to describe what I see in user accounts:

    'Pick a task'
    'Change an Account'
    'Create a New Account'
'Change the Way Users Log On and Off'

There are 3 family accounts and a guest account.

In the 'Change an Account' there is:

    Change my name
    create a password
    change my picture
    change my account type
set up my account to use a NET. password
