Buzzing hard drive noise - software or hardware problem?

Hi,
I have a Dell Dimension 8400 with XPHomesp2 (one year old). A month ago when online the harddrive (tower) starting making a loud, constant, buzzing noise. I shut down the computer and waited a few minutes and turned it back on and it was okay. I checked the four lights on the back of the tower and they were all green.

This afternoon the same thing happened again. The computer is running fine, but I'm concerned about that noise. It happened while on a myspace page that was playing a song with a lot of graphics. Could it be my hard drive or software?

I was thinking of running the Dell Diagnostic tool and the manual says to press F12 when the Dell logo appears. The manual says to run "express" first. Would this tell me if there is a problem with the hard drive...should I run any other test to check? I'd appreciate any advice about running this test since I've never done it before, if you think that's a good idea.

Sincerely, Libra

Yes, it will test the hard drive, and then you can run the Extended test if you'd like.

Thank you both for your replies. Unfortunately, my daughter hasn't wanted to get offline (it's her computer), so whenever she does, I will run the tests.

I want to back up a large music file as data (2 or 3 GB, with 502 songs) with Record Now. I did this once before but I backed up the whole "My Music" file and it has a desktop.ini file in there. Is there an easy way to select all the songs instead of one at a time?

I thought (on the file I previously copied, I could just remove the desktop.ini from within the program, but when I used the program that system file didn't show. But, when I view the disk in My Computer it's there. I don't know if that would give me problems restoring.

    Thanks.

I just wanted to let you know that I finally did the express test a few days ago and it showed no problems.  Thank you for your advice.

Since I last posted the tower has made that noise again. I called Dell and the fellow had me go through some diagnostic tests and had someone call me back. At the point when I spoke with him I either turned off the pc or the noise finally stopped. When the tech called me back it hadn't made that noise so I was told to turn off the speakers if it happened again and to call the tech back.

Well, it happened tonight (with no music playing). I turned off the speakers, but the noise continued and I called tech support. I reached her voice mail and left a message and shut down the computer (rebooting didn't stop the noise).

Could this be a fan? I don't know what to think but hope it isn't serious. I asked for a tech to come and check it out, but they explained to me they have to figure out the problem with me and then send a tech after they figure it out.

    Help.

    Sincerely, Libra
