"Cannot delete file: Cannot read from the source file or drive" ---- How do I delete this file?

I have a file which I cannot delete.
Its properties are: "C:\Documents and Settings\User Name\lDesktop\Backup Poop\BackupDataDir.bat." and the size is shown as 0 bytes.
When I try to delete, rename, move or delete the folder, I get the system message "Cannot delete file: Cannot read from the source file or disk".
I have looked for support on the internet and have found some advice for how this could get on my systtem if I were a FTP server, which I am not.
FYI, I believe this file got on my system when my son sent me a bat file example of using XCOPY which was imbedded in a text file.

Anyway the operating system cannot find the file.
Question: How do I delete this file?

Can you rename it? try to change it to a zip or rar file, you could use winzip or winrar before deleting it.

Have you tried deleting it in safe mode?

The operating system does not see the file even with the explorer.exe turned off

Dir /x returns the directory and shows no file content

Cannot do these ideas because the file is not recognized by the OS either with Explorer.exe enabled or without it.

    Thanks

Sometimes, a file will appear, even though it isn't really a file.

I think that is what they refer to as "orphan" file. Checkdisk fixes or removes orphan files.

I've had that happen to me many a time on my 2nd Hard drive.

OK, is it in a folder? Make a new folder. Transfer all of your important files to it (That the undeletable file is in)
Do not try to move the bad file to the new folder.

What then, will happen if you delete the folder the bad file is in?

    Just an idea.
