Cannot get Administrator access to download Windows 8.1 upgrade
Hello.
I have a new XPS8700. I have been unable to download the Windows 8.1 upgrade from the MS Store. My first problem was a lack of Windows updates, which I did, and now I can see the 8.1 upgrade in the store. I can also download updates to other aps.
My remaining problem is a continual notice every time I hit download that I need to first log into an account with admin access. Best I can tell, this and other forums have shown me how to add Admin capability with the Command prompt. I even created a second account and did the same thing. Within the User Summary screen within control panel, both USers show "administrator". Yet I still cannot get access
I have tried "net user administrator /active:yes" as well as tried same with swapping my name for administrator
The actual "administrator" user cannot do anything within the App Store. That appears to be what is supposed to happen.
I personally prefer clean installation and certainly having a means to clean install would be beneficial for you if you are having these issues with the factory settings. For instructions in how to clean install see Windows Reinstallation Guide/A Clean install of Windows 8.1:
Unfortunately the combination of Microsoft's policies (blocking Windows 8.1 media from accepting Windows 8.0 product keys) and Dell not shipping systems with Windows 8.1 is problematic for the end user. Dell will hence only be able to ship you Windows 8.0 Reinstallation media. If you can get your hands on Windows 8.1 media then you can clean install with it using the following arounds:
Note if you request installation media request the DVD and not the USB as the DVD may contain additional Dell drivers which may cause similar problems to the factory settings.
The initial user in Win 8 is automatically the administrator, so you didn't have to do all the user mods. I would go back and undo all that and start with a clean single user admin account. I have upgraded to 8.1 on five machines, with the only roadblock being not having all the updates installed. You also could consider using Refresh or Repair to get back to unmodified Win 8 and start over.
If you are still having issues trying to run the Windows 8.1 update through the Windows Store. Try the steps to reset the Windows Update Components below to see if they will resolve the issue.
If you have the updates installed can you uninstall and reinstall the Windows Update to see if it resolves the issue?
Thanks to all for the help. I tried the simplest approach/advice first and solved my problem. This may help others as well in the future:
First I did a system restore back to “new” (it had been out of the box 2 days) and started from scratch
Interestingly, I ended up with a single user (me), who has admin priveledges. Somehow before I had an “admin” user and a “me” user
Not sure how I screwed that part up originally
I tried the MS Store and could not see the 8.1 upgrade
I updated my Windows and now could see the 8.1 but still had the “log in with Admin creditionals”
At this time I looked for KB2871389 and sure enough it was there, but I noticed its install date was a week earlier, meaning Dell installed it.
I deleted KB2871389 and the computer went into a long reboot. I assumed I had to go through Windows update to get a fresh version, but I decided to go to the MS Store and see if I can download
At this point I was successful. Given that KB2871389 is not to be found on my computer now with 8.1, I can only assume that Windows update went and got it but then it got deleted as part of the 8.1 install
I'm having exactly the same problem as you were having, can you please explain what the 'KB2871389' is and how I find it and uninstall it, I'm hoping that I am not going to have to do a system restore. thanks
I have uninstalled the kb2871389 update, restarted the computer. The windows 8.1 update is on the 'store' but nothing happens when I click on it. very annoying computer only turned up today and I am already having problems. any more help would much appreciated. thanks
Yes. All previous update info is removed during the Win 8.1 install. ALL updates need to be installed to see 8.1 in the Store. Perhaps '1389 was NOT uninstalled. The long reboot time is suspicious. You should not have had a "me" user unless you added it.
I suspect that many failed installs are due to some types of "tweeks" people make or added poorly written software. There are, unfortunately, many ways to screw up Windows.
Our local computer club has in excess of 1000 members, and I have not heard any problems with the update. I will do a survey next week to see how many have tried the update and had this problem. Might be able to gain a better picture.

It seems common with Dell Factory Settings which is why I wrote the wiki.
Kirk - When I checked the date of '1389 install, it was Jan 21st. I did not take my computer out of the box until the 25th. So I would think definitely installed by Dell. All of the other updates (well I cannot account for all of them) showed Jan 25th, which is when I did the update. I can only assume I caused '1389 to reload after I deleted it. Because then everything worked.
I certainly created the "me" User. What confuses me is that before the restore I had another user called "administrator". I clearly could have done something wrong initially but highly doubt that I would have typed "administrator" instead of my name for the initial username. How I caused that to happen still baffles me. I do not recall a default option of "administrator" that I would have accepted. I recall a blank text box.
Benjamin - after you delete '1389 I would tell Windows to manually look for updates. If it does not add '1389 there is self help on the web to cause your system to find it. You should be able to see in Control Panel>Sys & Security>Windows Update>View Update History if it is in fact there and when it got downloaded. If it is there and dated from when you deleted and went and got a new one, I would think you are set. If an earlier date, then a good chance you need to delete and get it again.
Lastly, for anyone doing a restore like I did....my Dell preloaded Office became corrupted in the process. Did not realize till a day after I get 8.1 working. Dell had to help me remove and install as for some reason I could not get their "pre install software site" to even initiate.

Sounds like bad factory settings. I would advise uninstalling KB2871389 and reinstalling it manually. Also uninstall McAfee and then retry the update.

I would also recommend requesting a Windows 8 Reinstallation DVD from Dell.
