Cannot install Java

I recently reinstalled XP on a Dell Dimension 8400. I have downloaded everything I can find to do with Java but when I try to run the program I get a message telling me--"The installation package could not be opened. Verify that the package existsand that you can access it.or contact the application vendor to verify that this is a valid windows installer package." I have downloaded this from Sun. What am I doing wrong. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Thank you for your reply. I did download it from the same site as the link you gave. Could something have been missed in the reinstallation or is this a separate issue.

Thanks byker. I tried your suggestion but still came up with the same message about windows installer. I have sent a message looking for feedback from the Java site.

Hi..I also reinstalled windows xp professional...and am getting the exact same message.  Dell techs want met to call the software line and PAY.  Can anyone help?  I had the exact same problem but DELL helped me the last time.  I guess we have to start writing everything down.

    blayney,

The error message you received is usually associated with a problem with Windows Installer. Try downloadiing the latest version from here and see if the JRE will install properly.

I got this link from a friend. It is a big download if you are on dial up  as I am but I have friends with broadband so I will give it a try.

Denny,  Thank you so very much.  The dell tech emailed that solution to me and the only thing it did was give me an error message....virtuall C ++ abort program message when I restarted the computer after that.
So...I don't think it worked or...at least it didn't fix my installer.

I wendt out to windows update and was able to update some critical updates that came up today.  I did not have any problems with them.

I need to put Microsoft VM on my computer.and put a check mark on the JIT compiler..(I think) and I just dont' know how to do that.  My older computer has that listed under the internet explorer-internet options-advanced and I am able to chat with the AOL techs no problem.  That computer has an older version of windows xp home.

    Again...I would appreciate any suggestions.

    Debbie

Denny, thanks again for your suggestion but I'm afraid it didn't work. I downloaded the update but no luck. Looks like it has to be a call to Dell. Hope it doesn't work out too expensive. :lol

The Dell software support line suggested a few things to try . Unfortunately none of them work. They did say they would sort the problem for a price of €50. At this point in time that is money that can be put to better use. If I get an answer by any other means I will be back here to let you know.
