I just did a clean installation of Windows XP yesterday. After the install was complete I enabled the XP firewall and loaded my wireless-G USB network adapter software into the computer. After going through all the steps, such as entering WEP key and pass phrase I checked the Windows monitor and It said said that I was connected to the wireless network with good signal strength @ 1Mbps. So at this point I went to All Programs and clicked on Windows Update to start loading everything back on the computer that was removed via the restore. But when I clicked on Windows Updates a window popped up that said: "The web page you requested is unavailable offline. To view page click connect." So I clicked connect, and it said: No connection to the internet is currently available". Any idea what needs to happen in order to connect?
I entered my service tag and got a different list than the list from the link above. Which list should I follow?
Here's the list I got:
The following list is an overview of the correct order to install drivers on Dell desktops and portables. After reinstalling Microsoft® Windows®, follow the order listed when reinstalling drivers. It is recommended that you print this list for reference when installing drivers.
Note: Some devices may not function properly if the drivers are installed out of order.
1.
Desktop System Software (DSS) or Notebook System Software (NSS) - A vital utility that provides critical updates and patches for the operating system. If you are reinstalling Windows or updating all drivers, it is important that this software be installed first. This is located under the
System Utilities Category on the Drivers and Downloads page.
Note : NSS and DSS may not be available for all desktop and notebook products.
2.
Chipset - Helps Windows control system board components and controllers. This is located under the
Chipset Category on the Drivers and Downloads page.
3.
Video Adapter - Enhances video performance. This is located under the
Video Category on the Drivers and Downloads page.
4.
Network Interface Card (NIC) - Enhances the network controller for Internet or network access. This is located under the
Network Category on the Drivers and Downloads page.
5.
Laptops Only: Dell Quickset or Dell Control Point Manager (DCP) - Controls power management, ambient light sensor, wireless profiles, and security features on laptops. This is located under the
Applications on the
Drivers and Downloads page.
6.

Audio Category on the Drivers and Downloads page.

Network Category on the Drivers and Downloads page.
9.
Touchpad, Pointer, Trackstick, Mice, and Keyboards - Enhances the pointing device features. This is located under the
Input Device Drivers Category on the Drivers and Downloads page.
10. Other Devices
Intel vProTM or AMTTM - Enhances system manageability. This is located under the Chipset Category on on the Drivers and Downloads page.
Bluetooth ® Module located under the Network Category on the Drivers and Downloads page.
Dell Wireless Mobile Broadband Cards located under the Communication Category on the Drivers and Downloads page.
PCMCIA/Smartcard controller located under the Security Category on the Drivers and Downloads page.
Touch Screen Digitizer Enables touch screen mouse control available on select Dell laptops. This is located under the Input Category on the Drivers and Downloads page.
It helps if you include the PC model in your posts. :emotion-5:
Follow the list you found with your Service Tag. It should include DSS (assuming this model requires DSS) and chipset which are supposed to be the first 2 drivers installed after loading XP.
If you didn't install those first, download them on any PC and copy to desktop of this system. Then reboot XP in Safe Mode and install DSS followed by chipset. Then reboot normally, and install any other drivers you missed.
This is what I got after following the directions for locating the DSS/NSS driver. Can any one tell if any or all of these drivers listed below is what I need?
You will need those after a clean install of Windows, but neither is the DSS (or NSS) you need to install first. Since you haven't told us what PC this is, we can't direct you to the right DSS/NSS.
The ones you listed can be installed any time after the system is fully functional.
I went ahead and hooked a cable up to our router and got online thinking that I could go to Windows Update and get all the drivers and everything else that I needed.
It didn't load the drivers but loaded a lot of other programs. Do all these programs have to come off first before installing the drivers?
