Corrupt WMI
I am trying to change the firewall settings on xp home sp1 so that the computer will allow other computers from our network in. If going through network connections>change settings of this connection>advanced tab, there is a message that reads that the firewall settings are not available. It says that this may be due to a corrupt WMI file. Restore is not working so I think that I need to do a repair install of windows xp. This computer is not mine, but is my friend's (who g raciously allowed me to dump 7 gigs of music on to her computer while I install win xp on mine.) Will this repair install erase any of her applications, music, documents, settings, internet connections, network settings...etc? I would not like to screw up her computer to get my music back.

It's likely that a repair would make changes that your freind won't like. However, ther is something else you can do.Put the OS install disc in the CD or DVD drive and click on start/run, then type in sfc /scannow in the blank field. Click ok. This will repair any windows files that are corrupt. But also, maybe the settings aren't available to you because you aren't the system administrator(that would be your friend). Good luck.
