I've identified this update KB943899 in the January Vista updates as the source of a bluescreen. After first installing updates the normal way from Windows Update the computer restarts but never gets more than half way down on the progress bar on startup before a bluescreen appears briefly and the computer shuts down. Trying Safe Mode, Last Known Good Configuration, Repair (with Vista media) etc. doesn't solve anything. The computer starts, bluescreens and restarts. Today I formatted the C drive and reinstalled. Updating Vista I installed all the 2007 updates and it went very good. Then I tried to install the January 2008 updates one by one and found out that KB943899 is the reason. Anyone have experienced witht the same problem?
I've a XPS M1330
I've seen elsewhere in this forum that someone had problems with KB943411, but this is not a problem for me.
I'm having the same problem. I had 2 important and 3 optional updates on Jan. 8, and when I tried to install them all, they failed. This update included the KB943899.
I then tried to install each one individually and got all of them installed but the KB943899. For some reason this one fails. Not sure if I really need it or not so I just hid this update in Windows update.
Hopefully someone will come along with a good explanation.
Paul
Edit: I just tried to install the update again....this time turning off my firewall (Comodo) and it installed fine. Don't know if this had anything to do with the previous failures, but it's good now.
I have read that it is comodo that conflicts with several updates. I read that here and on a couple other forums, so if you do have that, disable it before updating. Then enable it again.
That article says this is a Hotfix or Recommended Update, not a critical update. I would skip it for now if it caused problems. Although I have to add I found that this hotfix actually might have solve some problems I had been having and works fine on my computer.
I do not have Comodo installed. The update fails regardless of what I try. I have to do a repair restart to get it going. I guess I will watch and see what happens.
Same here, Mike. None of the suggestions on this board did me any good at all. Still cannot get these KBs to install properly on my Vostro 1500 running Vista... :-((((((((((((((
I'd like to explain that the update KB943899 will update Ntoskrnl.exe. It is a core component called when Windows starts to run. Our issue can occur if OEM built-in software component affects the update installation so that Ntoskrnl.exe is not updated correctly.
Since this update will cause the unexpected system issue and many daily tasks rely on the computer, I suggest that we hide this update to workaround now.
