msn messenger

I am unable to get into my msn messenger.  my status is greyed out and when I try to sign in  a messaage comes up saying signing in to .NET messenger service failed and asked if I am on the internet.  My icon has the X meaning away or busy.  Maybe somehow I disconnected it  not sure what to do.  I can still check my email on hotmail

    valleygirl56,

What type of firewall program are you using?  If you recently upgraded to SP2 and are using a third party firewall program then go into Control Panel and turn off the Windows Firewall.  I don't see why MSN would be blocked by the Windows Firewall since they're both Microsoft products, but you never know and it does sound like a firewall issue to me.

Of course, I'm assuming you are using Windows XP.  If not, what OS?

    [Edit] Fixed grammar mistake.

    valleygirl56,

What OS do you have?  Are you using a firewall program and if so which one?

    valleygirl,

Check your add/remove programs for . NET framework. You might have to un-install messenger, re-install . NET framework, then re-install messenger. See if others agree. Do you have SP2? When did this first start happening?

Post up a hijack this log, and we'll see if anything is running on your pc that shouldn't be.

I have since removed and reinstalled the messenger. Now when I click on icon to open nothing happens.   I have checked the Service Status and it says all systems are stable and running.  MSN Messenger 6.2 is what is installed.
The Msn Messenger box appears and when I click Sign In-nothing happens

    valleygirl,

The articles on those refer to a firewall blocking the program. Have you tried to temporarily turn off the firewall and see if you can then sign on?

    Mike.

Yes I went to start, control panel, and Security Center and disconnected firewall but still no go.  In order to use hijackthis I need to download but not sure how to go about this.  I used it before but I must have deleted for I cannot find it now. I will need help with this.  I was using my messenger up to a couple of weeks ago but I noticed a few days ago that I could not access the messenger.  Another thing  is I always went on MSN to play crib and I have not been able to  for months now. Hope you can help me.

I rebooted my puter and I have a Norton Internet Security notice re Medium Risk-Microsoft MSN Messenger is attempting to access the internet.  I have checked the box  to permit and still cannot and then I checked the Configure box and still no go.  But Now when I attempt to use messenger a box comes up and the error is 0X81000365
