I have seen the suggestion to install ".net Framework" as a fix to the random "Application Error" notifyalert.exe annoying popups. My computer definitely has .net Framwork installed, yet I still get these error messages. Dell online support (phone) recommended running cwshredder.exe to fix the problem. I did this. Within a few hours, the notifyalert.exe problem returned. Surely, someone knows how to cure this disease.
Thanks. This sounds like the best solution. I found another suggestion related to Spybot SD, which apparently can delete a spyware file that Dell Support needs. I'm going to first try restoring this file. If this fails, Dell Support will become history.
Incredibly, my Dell Dimension 8300 will not allow me to remove "Dell Support" via the add/remove program utility. Have you ever encountered this? I receive an error message to the effect that some Install program encountered an unexpected error. Unless I can get around this, I may be stuck with the "Dell Support" program and therefore "notifyalert.exe". There must be a solution somewhere.
The fatal engine error is "0x7926fcd8", followed by "Error 1722", with a statement that some type of Installer program failed to finish.

I suspect that my problems began after the installation of Spybot SD. I'm going to restore all of the Spybot spyware deletions to see if perhaps one of them triggered the notifyalert.exe error messages. Then, goodbye Spybot.

Same problems on my new 8300. All worked fine until XP SP2, then NotifyAlert.exe reared. I was able to remove Dell Support only after uninstalling .Net Framework. You might want to try this.
I may try this if my current "fix" fails. By renaming several files and folders related to Dell Support (suggestion from another Dell victim), I haven't seen the problems for at least two weeks. Your solution sounds better.
Basil, I don't mean to suggest that Dell Support isn't worthy of being installed on one's machine but I do hate uncontrollable non-self initiated 'glitches', especially in a new machine . (by the way, mine is an 8400, not, as previously posted, an 8300) I was fully prepared to work with Dell and their program, particularly if it did what I think was intended, i.e. work with me to enhance my Dell experience, but I'll try to do it on my own until Michael gets things worked out.
Incidentally, I neglected to mention that I re-installed .Net Framework once Dell Support nuked. Now I'll work on PkZip, which is doing similar things.
Over the weekend, I installed the Windows SP2 security fix.
I was then ready to attempt your suggested solution when a new problem emerged. The Windows Update Manager recommended that I install service packs for .NET Framework. When I tried to do this, there several types of error messages and warnings. In short, the updates failed to install. Microsoft bulletin boards indicate that this situation is not uncommon (Microsoft software tech service promised to reply within 5 days).
So, until I can sort out this issue, I don't dare attempt to uninstall .NET Framework because I may not be able to reinstall it (with or without its service pack fixes).
