REINSTALLING SOFTWARE

I have received from Dell 2 CDs to reinstall Windows XP Home and other to reinstall Dell Inspiron 2200 system software.  My computer is a Inspiron 5160. Will this work or should I call them again and spend another hour being transferred around?
Thanks

Work for what?  Planning on a reinstall of your OS, or wanting CDs for the future?

Systems shipped after July 15, 2004 came with Symantec PC Restore. This utility restores the computer to an "as-shipped" condition. If you haven't reformatted, repartitioned, or otherwise modified the master boot record, it should work. Click here for instructions about Symantec PC Restore.

Can you tell me if the OS recovery will work for a system that has been infected by a virus?
Also if you have processes (spyware, etc.) that you cannot remove with canned software (they are typically not perfect) will the OS recovery process work on these? (In other words, does it have the effect of wiping the disk and reinstalling the OS, or will the problems still be there?)

You have to excuss me, I am new to not having a disk to wipe the hard drive and reinstall the OS.

    terry116,

PC Restore will return your system to its "as shipped" state with everything that was on it when you received it and nothing that has been added (including applicatioins you have installed, emails, documents you have created, and viruses).

As a matter of good practice you should have an XP reinstallation CD. (Hard drives have been known to fail and PC Restore is no help in that case.) Request one using one of the links here.

    ninavalent,

The System Software you received is compatible with both the Inspiron 2200 and Inspiron 5160, as well as a large number of other Inspiron and Latitude models.
