It's funny, I recieved this new machine and I have found myself spending more time updating the drivers, software,than I have been actually using it. But, Since I am, my question is. Do I need to shut down the resident programs (processes) running when updating or installing software or drivers. In Windows 98SE I had very few programs running in the background, and I pretty much knew the ones I could terminate when I installed software, and course I made sure their were no actual applications running at the time. With XP MCE I have 55 processes running but I have not shut any down, I just make sure I have no applications up.

Most of the time I'm told that we need to turn off the Virus scanners such as Norton ,but in all reallity, just disabling Norton does not unload it from memory. So far I have installed New Video drivers, software,hardware, and all I have done was disable the programs like Norton security, Norton anti-Virus, and SpyBot S&D.

Can someone tell me the best way to prepare my machine the next time I go to install, How do I actually turn off the programs? msconfig maybe, then reboot.

I must admit, so far I have loaded new software like Nero 6.6 and have had no problems, I have installed a E-Home Wonder PCI card with all associated software and have had no problems.
