If it's a laptop then I doubt you have a 3rd party sound card. My 730x has a Creative X-FI sound card and the Vista x64 drivers work just fine. :emotion-40:
If you didn't install the Intel Chipset drivers that is probably the problem. You MUST install the chipset drivers before installing sound drivers or in most cases the sound drivers will not find the sound module and won't install. On a new install the required steps are (1) Install Windows (whatever version), (2) Install Chipset Drivers (3) Install Device Drivers such as sound, video, etc.
Since there is a Vista 64 bit sound driver, it should work without problems in Vista 64 bit. The kicker is the often overlooked chipset drivers. One of the prime functions the chipset drivers do is define what devices are on or attached to the motherboard.

I've got a Dell XPS M1330 and installed W7 RC 32-bit yesterday. It was replacing my Vista, and therefore most of the drivers were already working (or maybe they are included in W7, at least a lot of things were working already). When I tried to play a song there was no sound, not on the speakers nor on the HDMI channel.
After downloading the latest driver from Dell itself I installed the new driver, rebooted and.... still no sound. After that I went to the device manager, uninstalled the driver that was at the "sound" tab and reinstalled the latest driver. Another reboot and I heard the "jingle" at my login screen!
So try to uninstall and reinstall with the latest driver. It might be that the already installed driver (be it included in W7 or taken from the Vista install) is somehow bugged. Hope this works for you :) (even though I know it isn't the 100% exact problem as I had).
Hello, this is the same problem that exists when upgrading from XP to Vista. Dell already has posted a solution to this, with a suitable update here: http://support.dell.com/support/topics/global.aspx/support/dsn/en/document?c=us&docid=284A36D51B8B897AE040A68F5B285AE4&l=en&s=gen#2

To be honest, I'm not sure.. I've looked at the Device Manager and all that I see is SigmaTel High Definition Audio CODEC (for 64-bit Windows)
