I just installed the SP2 onto my Inspiron 1140 Dell laptop that I just purchased about 6 months ago. It was running fine until I installed this pack and now it is running so slow that I can barely use it. I am a grad student and depend on my computer running at its best. Are there any suggestions out there to help my computer get back to normal?
I found this in another Dell forum and it saved me TONS of time.
The Processor driver installed by service pack 2 (dated 4/1/2004) causes computers with the Celeron processors to slow to a crawl. The old driver (dated 7/1/2002) does not do this. You can roll back to the new driver and see if it helps:
Right-click My Computer and choose properties
On the Hardware Tab, choose Device Manager
Click the "+" next to processors, right click your processor and choose properties
Click the driver tab. Confirm that the date of your driver is 4/1/2004. If so, click roll back driver.
Windows will warn you that the driver you're rolling back to is not digitally signed. Continue anyway.
Reboot when Windows tells you to and see how it runs then.
FWIW: I updated the BIOS to the latest and that did not make the newer driver perform properly. If someone from Dell would care to post a remedy that would allow use of the newer driver, I'm sure many people would appreciate it.
I also had a sluggish slow windows after I installed SP 2 on my Dell Inspiron 1150 on September 18th. After trying a number of programs I found a few would not even run correctly. For example, I use SmartFTP and it would not even connect. Another example is the Windows Media Player was running very slow and sluggish even on my cable modem. Also I could not load flash from a website even after I put the site as a trusted site and I unchecked the mark from the required server verification in the Internet security options. So about 4 hours after installing SP2, I successfully removed it and then I still had a few programs not work correctly. Then I went to the system restore point I had before installing SP 2 and restored the computer back and then all my programs started working again.
I just received a Dell support alert this morning. They have a patch for the XP Service Pack 2 problem for the Inspiron 1150. Dell™ Inspiron™ 1150 Update for Microsoft® Windows® XP Service Pack 2 (SP2)
Overview
Before or after installing Windows XP Service Pack 2 on your Inspiron 1150 perform the following:
Download the Inspiron 1150 Update
Install the Inspiron 1150 Update
Click the links above for detailed instructions.
NOTE: Installing this patch could help with possible performance loss after installing Service Pack 2 on an Inspiron 1150 with an Intel® Celeron® processor.
