Switching User Accounts

On Inspiron 600m with an Windows XP professional operating system. When I use the switch user account function, the system will lock up and the only alternative is to turn off the system with the power button. I have recently reinstalled the operating system. Is there something I can do?

how much ram do you have? Switching user accounts and be logged on can really hog your RAM. Disable that function and you should be fine.

The system has 1.60GHz processor & 512 MB of RAM.
Is the best alternative just to have one account?

that should be sufficient. Do you run programs on different accounts. When you do, you use virtual memory which is from your harddrive which is like memory but slower. Try switching but not using any programs.

its better to have one account. The computer runs better overall, and it's easier to manage.

Make sure you have a big enough Paging File.

Right-click My Computer > Properties > Advanced > Settings button for Performance > Advanced tab >

then look at the MB file size at the bottom of the dialog. My default is 768MB. To change it, click Change, then click the radio button for Custom size, type in a figure (don't make it too big, 1024MB should be more than enough) then click Set. Click OK on all the dialogs then restart the computer.

      Dear Robert,

Just a note: The switching between accounts after resetting the page file size works almost  instantly.

      A much noticeably difference.

      Sincerely
