Now check your settings for the Notification Area to see if you are Hiding Icons. Right click on Taskbar, go to Properties, check Hide Inactive icons temporarily so you can click on Customize, Find the Volume icon in list and use the dropdown menu to select Always Show. Do the same for all the other icons you want to show & OK it, then go back and uncheck hide icons so all icons will show up even if they are unused.

Thanks for your suggestion. i tried it before and again just now with no success. Some of my icons do not match the names in customize notifications?
How to Clear Past Items from the Notification Area
If the volume control icon is missing, use Start > Search > For files and folders > All files >
and type in or copy/paste:
SndVol32.ex_
Search and note the location. It should be in C:\i386. If it's there go to Start > Run > type in
Cmd [OK]. Copy/paste the bold text below in the box and [Enter]:
MARY G: Thank-you for that post. It solved the sudden problem I had with not being able to locate my volume icon and I have spent enough time trying to figure out how to bring it back! I could not figure out why the vlume icon was not checked and was shaded out and it was only due to the hide inactive icons box being checked. Thanks again!
