Unwanted Guests

Good Morning:

Dell Dimension E521
Vista OS
1Gb
Windows Defender
Macafee (paid version)

Recently I became curious about the reliability of my security suites and ran SpyDoctor.  The results as I expected were numerous ad/spywares.  Unfortunately, I was unable to remove the culprits without purchasing SpyDoctor.  Can anyone suggest a "free" spy/adware remover?

Also at times when I turn off the popup blocker to temporarily allow a program through, an ad also pops through.  Is this normal?

Thanks

    Regarding SpyDoctor...

It may not be a legit anti-spyware app. Spybot Search & Destroy is a good one.

AdAware by Lavasoft is also good. Windows defender is OK, but should be used with one of the above. McAfee is junk IMO, it uses huge amounts of resources and then has the cheek to ask you to pay for it. Personally I like AVG, but there are many other free ones available.

Thank you for the information.  What you are saying is true, however my system was a birthday gift along with the "paid" Macafee.  I had many problems in the beginning.  But for the last 2 months, every scan resulted in 0 tracking cookies which I found too good to be true (that is why I ran the SpyDoctor).  Even with that scan, which may or may not be accurate, the results were 36 tracking cookies.

I will take the suggestions given and try the other scanners.

    Again, thank you.

    God Bless You.
