WIN XP won't standby

My Dimension 4600 windows xp will not go into standby power mode. Instead, it completely shuts down at the assigned "standby power" time, then requiring a complete reboot and losing all programs and data that were open  at the time.  I've made no hardware changes, and only a few minor software additions since this problem began.     Any ideas ?

FWIW, and this doesn't "fix" your standby problems, but the general concensus on the forum including a post by a Dell moderator is to NOT use Standby or Hibernate.  They were designed for laptops to conserve battery power.  Only "power off" the monitor and hard drives.

Standby can cause many documented problems with modems, video, sound, etc.
