XP re-install problems
Hello all.
I've got a couple of viruses that I can't get rid of so have decided to re-install and start from scratch. I've backed everything up (I hope) and am ready to go.
The problem I've got is that when I boot from the XP cd, the setup starts off OK but after a short while I get a message tellimg me that no hard drive can be found and that setup has failed. The only option I'm then given is to reboot.
Any thoughts?
Please bear in mind I'm not yet gifted with a vast knowledge of tech speak so if you have any ideas please treat me like an idiot. lol.

P.S. it's an 8400
P.P.S. Presumably using the restore to "as shipped" optionwouldn't be enough to wipe off any "nastys" ??

As a matter of fact, it will. It will restore your system to the state it was the day you received it, with nothing that has been added since.

Well Denny. After a lot of nervous aprehension I can now say that thnaks to your fantastic guidlines, I am now the proud owner of a newly installed XP. Many thanks.
I have got another question though.
Following your link to the other site (can't remember the name) giving guidlines to installing XP, I did exactly what he said with no probs. However. Having got all available windows updates, I have a small niggle. That is, whenever I start up windows and log on, I now get a "System 32" folder apearing on my desktop which I then have to close each time. Very annoying.
I had the same problem just before I did the re-install but thought it was something to do with a virus I had. Now I'm guessing it has something to do with a windows update.
Any ideas on how to stop it opeing each time?

Yippee. Once agian Denny you are the fountain of all knowledge. From now on I won't bother with the useless Dell helpline. I'll just ask you.

You don't say what model your computer is, but perhaps the information here will be helpful.
